Salmonella is arguably the most common and well known form of food poisoning to affect all-inclusive holidaymakers. Salmonella are a group of bacteria usually found in the gut of many animals, such as farm animals and poultry. This in turn can lead to eggs, milk and other dairy products that people eat becoming infected. Cooking meat properly usually kills the Salmonella bacteria. However if foods are undercooked or not prepared hygienically this can lead to the infection spreading.

Salmonella is very common and can affect anyone of any age. Although the symptoms are usually not severe in healthy people, they can be serious in young children or the elderly. As Salmonella can be spread from person to person, it is very likely that it can affect an entire family or party travelling together.

Most foreign holiday destinations with hot climates have risks of Salmonella with some of the most common being Egypt and Turkey.

The symptoms of Salmonella include:

  • Mild to severe dehydration
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Sickness
  • Blood in the stool

These symptoms can last for around 7 days or longer depending on how bad the infection is. The main problem associated with Salmonella is huge fluid loss and dehydration which can be very serious if not treated.

If any of the above symptoms are experienced it is advised that medical attention is sought straight away. It is important to replace lost fluids with rehydration salts and bottled water. Anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen is recommended to ease any pain.

To avoid the risk of contracting Salmonella it is important to follow these guidelines:

  • Avoid foods not cooked thoroughly and/or re-heated incorrectly.
  • Avoid foods not prepared hygienically.
  • Avoid food not stored at the correct temperature.
  • Avoid salads and any uncooked fruits and vegetables (these may have been handled unhygienically).
  • Frequently use an alcohol-based hand gel.

It is your tour operator’s responsibility to make sure you are provided with a safe, clean and hygienic hotel.
